3 Tips For Practicing Contra (Counter- Clapping)

Contra, or counter-clapping, is one of the nicest things you hear in flamenco. Many people want to learn how to do it; however, it can also prove to be one of the most difficult things to do when playing flamenco. So In this post We are going to give you a few tips on how you can practice it at home.
Before we begin, We just want to make sure that you know you should always practice slowly. Probably many of you already know this, but We just want to make sure We remind everyone, because practicing slowly will make you much more effective when playing faster.

Steady Footwork: So the first tip We want to give you to get your feet moving in unison with the compás. This is because your feet serve as a reference point, and if the feet are not moving steady, your hands will also not be steady.

Clapping With Compás: Once you have mastered your footwork, you should start clapping with the compás, do not try to do the contra yet. First get your hands to play the accents in the beat and make sure you can do effortlessly.

Do The Contra: Finally you can start doing the contra. Make sure you do it very slowly and that you use your footwork as a reference point. This way you will always make sure you are doing the contra.

To make it more clear We want to leave you with this video so that you can see for yourself how it is done.
